Sierra Club, Loma Prieta Chapter: Chapter Director
The Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club is home to over 19,000 members in San Benito, Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. We are engaged in a wide range of activities including outings, political candidate endorsements and local conservation campaigns. As part of the Sierra Club, a nationally recognized, volunteer driven environmental organization, the Loma Prieta Chapter (SCLP) plays an important role in protecting the Bay Area’s environmental resources through direct action, leadership development and connecting people with nature.
We are seeking a Chapter Director (CD) to lead the organization and execute our strategic objectives. Chapters of the Sierra Club serve four key functions: advance the mission of the Sierra Club, provide service to members, supporters and the public, build local resources, and exercise effective governance & fiduciary oversight. Chapter Director Job Description and Responsibilities:
The Chapter Director implements policies and programs adopted by the Chapter Executive Committee (ExCom). The CD manages the staff budget and operations of the following operational areas: conservation program, fundraising, volunteer development and member services, budgeting and financial management, and media relations. LEADERSHIP
- Provide leadership and confidence to staff, volunteers, community and stakeholders.
- Assist the Executive Committee and other chapter committees to develop the Chapter's short and long term strategic, programmatic and financial goals and objectives.
- Serve as spokesperson for the organization in the community, at professional conferences, and with media.
- Build alliances and partnerships with like minded organizations for greater impact.
FUNDRAISING & COMMUNITY RELATIONS
- Responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes corporate, individual, and foundation support in cooperation with the ExCom.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with appropriate community, government and nonprofit agencies.
- Provide a presence for SCLP in the community.
- Develop relationships with appropriate organizations to build awareness of community needs and SCLP’s role in serving those needs.
MANAGEMENT, PLANNING, AND PROGRAM EXECUTION
- Provide sound fiscal management / financial planning, decision making, and accountability.
- Coordinate the preparation and implementation of the yearly budget including the development and implementation of adequate financial controls, monitors and practices.
- Coordinate efforts with the national headquarters staff and ensures that the chapter strategies are in compliance with national requirements.
- Maintain a climate which attracts, retains and motivates a diverse and high caliber team of staff, volunteers, and ExCom members.
- Manage staff in assigned operational or program areas. Writes and conducts performance appraisals and takes personnel actions as appropriate. Insures Chapter’s compliance with Sierra Club’s employment policies and practices.
- Negotiate and ensures accountability for all contracts and grants.
- Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of Chapter issues and stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BA/BS, minimum 3-5 years managing a budget and staff for a company or non-profit
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and work as a team member
- Organizational skills and basic computer skills
- Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
- Knowledge and background in the environmental field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience and success raising money and developing / executing fundraising plan
- Proven successful grant-writing record
- Knowledge of the local philanthropic community
- Marketing and media relations experience
- Success building an organization, driving growth and building a strong team culture
- Direct volunteer and/or professional experience with environmental policy, environmental education and/or community organizing
Compensation: $55,000-$65,000. Benefits package includes health, vision, and dental insurance.
Status: Full-time, exempt position.
