Up to $112,195 year

The Marin County Department of Parks and Open Space is seeking a strong leader who is team-oriented to work in a dynamic professional atmosphere. Under the general direction of the Deputy Director of Administration, the Planning & Resources Chief directs and manages parks and open space planning, development and acquisition activities and provides technical assistance to the Department and the Marin County Parks and Open Space Commission. Duties include: administer the acquisition and preservation of land and trails, and the planning of parks, open space, and trails; manage the preparation of site evaluations, acquisition studies, feasibility studies, master plans, land management plans and policy development; manage the Department CIP which includes preparation of land and facility improvement plans, construction drawings, specifications and cost estimates; coordinate the work of consultants, other county departments, community groups and others on planning and acquisition projects; manage efforts to secure grants and other project funding; represent the department at public and private meetings; act as department liaison to special interest groups and the public; assist with development of the department’s annual budget and performance plan.

The ideal candidate possesses 6-8 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in park/open space planning, land acquisition, and capital improvement planning; 5 years of management/administrative level experience; proven leadership skills; excellent knowledge of the conservation field with specialization in land preservation tools and methods; knowledge of the principles and practices of parks and open space work and local government; ability to lead a team through implementation of a multi-year capital improvement plan; strong relationship-building and negotiation skills.

Requirements: A combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from college with a major in landscape architecture, resource management or conservation, land use planning, environmental planning, real estate or closely related field and four years of increasingly responsible professional experience in park/open space planning, land acquisition, capital improvement planning and a minimum of one year at a supervisory level. Additional graduate level courses in landscape architecture, land use planning, environmental planning or closely related fields may substitute for up to one year of the experience requirement.
