Overview
The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council, located in the magnificent San Francisco Presidio, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created to plan, build and promote a 550+ mile trail for hikers, equestrians, mountain bicyclists and outdoor enthusiasts on the ridgelines around San Francisco Bay. The Ridge Trail connects people and communities to each other and to close-to-home recreation and natural open spaces. Ultimately, it will connect over 75 parks and open spaces. This year, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of our founding with over 310 miles of trail open for people to enjoy today and forever.

The Council works in close partnership with public agencies, land trusts, landowners and local advocates in nine Bay Area counties to complete the Ridge Trail. Our work is supported by individual donors and foundation, corporate, and government grants.

Position
The Development Manager is responsible for creating, managing, and executing all facets of the Council’s development program, including fundraising from individuals, foundations and corporations. The Development Manager provides direct support for the Executive Director and the Board on major gifts and appeals, coordinates the donor database and gift acknowledgement process with the Office Manager, and helps manage and coordinate trail and fundraising events with other staff. The successful candidate has an exciting opportunity to solidify and grow the Council’s development program.

The Council has staff of 6.5, a board of 28, and an annual operating budget of $900,000.

Responsibilities
• Creates the Council’s comprehensive annual development plan and integrates development activities with the Council’s programs.
• Manages the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of members. Manages communications with donors, including appeals and special updates.
• Analyzes results of our acquisition and renewal efforts, communications and member services; and recommends and implements changes to optimize results.
• In conjunction with the Executive Director and volunteers, coordinates and makes solicitation and cultivation calls to donors and prospective donors.
• Researches foundation and corporate prospects, maintains grant schedule, coordinates with the Executive Director and program staff to develop.
• Plans and coordinates member and donor events in conjunction with Office Manager, Field Directors, part-time Volunteer Coordinator and Executive Director.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
• At least 3-5 years related development experience and demonstrated fundraising success. Prior work with environmental organization desirable.
• Ability to think strategically, set priorities, meet deadlines and work collaboratively.
• Superior organizational skills,
• Ability to cultivate positive relationships with staff, donors, board members and volunteers.
• Strong leadership ability and a proven capacity to motivate, build, and support an effective team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks gracefully.
• Strong database and computer skills. Familiarity with Filemaker Pro a plus.
• Experience/ aptitude using web technology for outreach and to engage volunteers and Board members highly desirable.
• Driver’s license and ownership or access to a motor vehicle.

Compensation and Benefits
The Ridge Trail Council offers a competitive salary, commensurate with experience. This is a full-time exempt position with generous medical, vacation and retirement benefits. Position available immediately and until filled. The Council is an equal opportunity employer.
